Northlight Apartments are in the historic heart of Kirkwall, within walking distance of local shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and leisure facilities.

Kirkwall is Orkney's main town, and a great base for exploring the islands.

To the west is the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, with its amazing Stone Age tombs and monuments. There are beaches and moorland for walking, stunning cliffs and rocky shores, nature reserves, craft workshops and museums to visit. The picturesque port of Stromness, with its steep and narrow closes, is full of interest including shops, a museum and the renowned Pier Arts Centre.

To the East and South of Kirkwall is a farmed landscape rich with sandy beaches, coastal walks, lots of historical interest and a number of craft workshops and tearooms. You can cross the Churchill Barriers, and visit the Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners during World War II, which stands today as a monument to their fortitude.

To the North lie more inhabited islands, a ferry journey from Kirkwall, each with its own character and landscape. The ferry terminal for departures to the North Isles is just minutes away from the apartments.

Within 2 minutes walk of the apartments is a Co-op store open late 7 days. Advance orders can be placed with local delicatessen The Brig Larder. The Albert Hotel next door serves breakfast for non-residents, and there are cafes and restaurants nearby. You'll find information on Kirkwall services and businesses here.


Northlink ferry services operate to and from Aberdeen, docking at Hatston 10 minutes' drive from the apartments. Northlink also run daily services from Scrabster (near Thurso) on the Scottish mainland to Stromness, 17 miles west of Kirkwall.

Pentland Ferries operate daily services from Gills Bay (near Wick) to St Margaret's Hope, 15 miles south of Kirkwall.

Kirkwall Airport has direct flights to and from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen, with good connections beyond. It lies 10 minutes outside the town, and is also the departure point for short flights to some of Orkney’s many islands.

Orkney Car Rental are located next door to the apartments and also provide vehicles at the airport. There are other car rental companies based in Kirkwall - best to book well in advance - and a number of private tour operators and taxi firms offering guided tours.

There are regular bus services between Kirkwall, Stromness and other parts of the Orkney mainland and linked South Isles, operated by Stagecoach. The main bus station is just a few minutes' walk from the apartments - click here for Bus timetables.
